Celebrating 90 Years at Mount Peter: Grandma’s Having Fun

Some birthdays are marked with cake and candles. Others are marked with snow, laughter, and a tubing hill full of familiar smiling faces.

This winter, Nancy chose to celebrate her 90th birthday at Mount Peter, surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren, sliding down the tubing slopes and making memories that spanned generations. What made it even more special? Mount Peter is celebrating its 90th season too.

For Nancy, this wasn’t just a birthday party. It was a homecoming.

A Lifetime of Memories on the Mountain

Nancy’s connection to skiing goes back decades; all the way to the 1950s. Like many lifelong skiers, she started at small local areas that no longer exist, but when her children were young, Mount Peter became her go-to place.

“It was such a wonderful place to ski with young children,” she shared. “We could all ride the lift together. They could ski the easier trails, and I could still enjoy the Black Diamond.”

As her kids grew and their skills progressed, the family moved on to larger mountains. But Mount Peter always remained special, the place where skiing was accessible, joyful, and family-centered.

Why Tubing Was the Perfect Choice

For years, Nancy celebrated her birthday by taking her family on ski weekends. But this year, she wanted something a little different and closer to home for everyone.

“I thought it would be more enjoyable than going out to a restaurant,” she laughed. “That would be boring.”

Tubing turned out to be the perfect answer. With about 25 family members on the hill, including a 2-year-old great-grandchild riding the carousel and tubing with her dad, the afternoon was filled with smiles, not just from Nancy’s family, but from everyone around them.

“It was wonderful,” she said. “Everybody looked like they were having a grand time. It was nice to be a part of all of that.”

Turning 90, Still Going Strong

When asked what turning 90 feels like, Nancy’s answer was simple and inspiring.

“Luckily, I have good health. So I just continue to do what I’ve always done.”

It’s a philosophy she’s lived by for decades, one she perfectly summed up:
“You never stop having fun if you never stop having fun.”

Staying active has always been a source of joy for Nancy. A lifelong sailor who raced and crossed oceans, Nancy believes movement and being outdoors are key ingredients to a happy life.

That mindset carried her and her family right onto the tubing hill.

Some people were surprised she went tubing at 90, but Nancy wasn’t.

“It’s about the easiest thing you can do on the snow,” she said. “You ride the lift up, and you ride down. It’s perfect.”

Advice Worth Passing Down

When asked what advice she’d give younger generations about enjoying life and celebrating milestones, Nancy didn’t hesitate.

“Stay close to your family,” she said. “They’re the best support you can have.”

She hopes her grandchildren remember one thing most: that Grandma wasn’t sitting at home, she was out there having fun with them.

“That’s how you stay close,” she explained. “You’re out there doing the same things they’re doing.”

One Word to Describe the Day

When asked to sum up her birthday celebration in one word, Nancy smiled and said:

“Perfect.”

And how does she hope her 90th birthday will be remembered?

“Grandma’s having fun.”

90 Years Together

Celebrating a 90th birthday at a mountain that’s also marking 90 years felt meaningful and rare.

“What are the chances of that?” Nancy said. “I can’t imagine how special it could be.”

For us, celebrating Nancy was a reminder of what Mount Peter has always been about: family, fun, and making memories that last a lifetime.

Happy 90th, Nancy. Thanks for celebrating with us.
